Well I am getting a puppy pretty soon and I was wondering since I will be at school all day what is the best way to potty train her? I read up on all that potty training stuff but since I will be gone most of the day should I put a puppy pad in her kennel/playpen? Also if she sleeps wiht me at night then will that interfear with her learning to potty outside? I really don’t know because when we got my other dog he was already trained. Can you help me with tips on potty training her as fast as possible since I will be gone all day at school? Thanks.

…or if they use the crate incorrectly? What are the alternatives to house training if crate training won’t be used? How do you advise an owner if they’re using the crate incorrectly (in isolation of basement, puppy "jailed" for 8 hours without a break, accepting that the crate is a place for potty time, etc)? BTW, do you think that the examples I gave are boarder line abusive?
Goldengal, I agree with everything, except the bathroom idea. I was going to use that idea until my vet warned me of puppies/young adult dogs getting wedged and stuck around the toilet. Also, my Golden loved to unwind our toilet paper, LOL!
I’m not a breeder, vet or trainer. I am just interested in your answers because I have a family member who brought a 6 wk old pup in their home. They didn’t do any research, and now they’re using a crate for 8 PLUS hours and they’re hitting the poor pup for eliminating in the house. Apparently, they "try" to get the puppy out to potty in the morning before they go to work. HOW ON EARTH DO YOU TRY?? YOU EITHER DO IT OR YOU DON’T! For crying out loud! This is abuse, isn’t it. They won’t listen to me or my Sister in law. How frustrating!

I also give her lots of praise and an occasional treat at times. A few times I have put her in my office with a gate while I am doing things around the house. I leave her in there with a pad to go on and toys and her crate to sleep in. She will pee everywhere else put not on the pad like I have been training her to do. Sometimes she doesnt even sniff around for her scent, she will just go wherever she is at that moment. She also was laying on my couch one day and went while she was laying down. I don’t know what else to do. I may have too high expectations. How long do these puppies usually take to break.

I cannot be home all day like I would like to be… I have a 3 mo old shih tzu puppy and I am having a hard time figuring out how I want to potty train. Do I use the potty pads that I bought? Do I try and make him go outside? I would love for him to stop peeing all over his soft toys and every room in the house. But honestly, I am not home enough to make sure he pees every hour or so outside. I dont want to make him hold it until I get home, cause I am afraid that is cruel or that he wont be able to since he is still a baby. I guess I want to eliminate him going over someone elses house and peeing cause this is how he was trained at home. What do I do? He has his own room, and does well by himself, its just the peeing all on the carpet that is annoying. Its like he pees INCHES from the potty pad on purpose!
