House breaking your puppy basics
..
When you’re housebreaking your puppy, you should use confinement as much as possible. This means that until your new puppy has been housebroken, he isn’t allowed to move around freely in the house. Always keep a watchful eye on him. When he’s out of his crate, make sure you always know where he is and what he is doing.
A young puppy can easily relieve himself on the floor anytime when you take your eyes off of him, even for a second! Once this happens, he may thought this is the right place to relieve, then it can be very difficult to get him break away from this habit.
The smell is now there on that spot on the floor, and he will smell it the next time he’s there. Each time he smells it, he will instantly go to that same area. That’s why it’s so important to watch your puppy all the time to make sure he only goes in the allocated area.
To house break your puppy, you should also allow him a way outside. This is where a doggy door plays a role in helping to house break your puppy. A doggy door allows your puppy to go outside the house and relieve himself when he needs to without bothering you.
Inside the house, you could also use puppy pads or a litter box, so that he always has a place to relieve himself. Obviously there will be times when your puppy can’t make it outside, then he needs somewhere else that he can go.
Housebreaking your puppy can take you some time and perhaps test your patience, but it’ll be well worth it once your puppy is properly trained. Just like any member in your family, it’s not appropriate for him to do it anywhere he likes.
He needs to know that he is allowed to relieve himself outside or only in an area that you have trained him.
